Surfing Points
Arugam Bay Baby Point and Main Point
Arugam Bay is known for the popular surf breaks Baby Point and Main Point, where you can find the perfect waves all season round. Baby point has a sandy bottom and is a beginner friendly surf point that produces gentle waves, shallow waters and easy access to the break. Whilst Main Point has some reef bottom and most suited for the intermediate surfer, producing clean, long rides with open faces.
Elephant Rock
Elephant Rock is an ideal surfing location for the beginner and intermediate surfer located only 20 minutes south of Arugam Bay. This surf location consists of a right-hand point break and works best early morning or on slightly windy days. This spot is not only an ideal surf break but also a popular location to watch the magical sunsets at the top of Elephant Rock.
Peanut Farm
Peanut Farm is 7km south of Arugam Bay and is a popular surf location as it has two safe breaks perfect for beginner and intermediate. This surf break works all season round and produces clean, long right-hand point breaks. Peanut Farm has a chilled vibe amongst the locals and tourists and is surrounded by peanut farms, and occasionally wild elephants.
Lighthouse Komari
The Lighthouse in Komari is located 22 km north of Arugam Bay. You can access the beach to the surf break by walking through the Beach Hut Property. There is a restaurant at Beach Hut which has excellent rice and curry and famous for the cabanas. The point is named after a destroyed Lighthouse in the era of war. The ruins of it are still visible.
The surf is a right-hand beach break. It’s one the shortest surf points in the Arugam Bay area, but you may get more wave time as it’s a more remote surf location. The point usually starts working later in the season around June. It’s an almost private beach and surf spot.
Pottuvil Point
Pottuvil Point is a well-known right hand surf break in Arugam Bay and involves a short ride through a local village to get to the location. There are two breaks both with sand bottom which makes this break perfect for beginner and intermediate surfers. This break can be surfed from July until November or even sometimes December. The ideal time to surf this point is in the morning and late afternoon. Pottuvil Point is also another population location to relax on the beach and watch the sunset.
Panama
Panama Beach is approximately 12 km South of Arugam Bay. This coastal village is known for its surf breaks which are suitable for beginner and intermediate surfers. This surf break has some submerged rocks but are easy to locate and avoid and can be a fun place to surf. This break usually does not work until later in the season and works best when there is bigger swell. Panama Beach is also good for a visit, even if there is no surf as it is famous for its beautiful beaches and wildlife spotting.
